After earning a Bachelor of International Finance and Marketing and an MBA from University of Miami, I pursued a PHD in International Health as I worked in the healthcare industry in Latin America and the Caribbean. In 1994 we discovered Durango and recognized it as the perfect place to raise our children. We were drawn in by the sense of community, the kindness and the quality of life. We immediately made lasting connections.
Our latest 2019 CMAS (Colorado Measurement of Academic Success) scores show almost 80% of our 9R students are below grade level in math and over 60% of our 9R kids are AT LEAST ONE GRADE LEVEL BEHIND in English and Language Arts. Our 9R dropout rate is 1 out of 4! Parents are feeling left out with regard to their own children's education, and they feel there is a ack of communication from the schools. I want to change that. As your representative from District E, I will focus on open classrooms, open School Board meetings, School Board transparency, and academic excellence.
As a parent, I know what it feels like to navigate through a school district that did not meet the needs of my children. Our family experimented with homeschooling, charter schools, study abroads, and ultimately our kids graduated from Durango High School. I believe that as a community, we must work together to become one of the best academically successful districts in Colorado. I want the Board to work together with parents, teachers, administrators and the superintendent to build Durango’s future.
